Puppy feeding charts by breed
Puppy calories depend on what the puppy weighs today and whether it is under four months. The charts take each breed's standard adult weight, step through the growth from 15% to 100% of it, and apply the Merck Veterinary Manual's factors: 3 × RER under four months, 2 × RER from four months to maturity, then the adult factor.
Three things the charts show
First, the total rises through puppyhood even though the factor halves at four months, because weight is climbing faster than the factor falls. Second, the peak comes before maturity: a puppy at 70–85% of adult weight on 2 × RER eats more than the finished adult dog on 1.6 × RER, so the ration has to come down at the switch. Third, the curve is the same shape for every breed — only the adult weight changes — which is why small breeds hit the switch at eight to ten months and giant breeds past eighteen.
Worked example at 369 kcal/cup: a puppy that will be 70 lb needs about 701 kcal at 11 lb, 1208 kcal at 39 lb, 1668 kcal at 60 lb, and 1498 kcal as a 70 lb neutered adult.
