Dog bed size chart by weight

Bed makers size by dog weight, which works because beds have no hard walls to clear. The charts below are Orvis's fit guide for its rectangle and round beds; most other makers' bands are within a few inches.

Sleeping style changes the answer

A dog that sleeps stretched on its side needs a bed at least as long as its body from nose to base of tail plus a few inches — measure it as you would for a crate — and a rectangle or mattress shape. A dog that curls up fits a round or bolster bed roughly one size smaller than the weight chart suggests, because the chart assumes stretched-out use. Older dogs and heavy breeds do better on thicker, firmer foam that does not bottom out; a 90 lb dog compresses a 3 in polyfill pad to the floor.

Puppies chew; buy a cheap bed for the adult size and use a folded blanket in the crate until the chewing phase passes, then move up to the long-term bed. For the crate itself, see the crate size chart — crate beds must be no larger than the crate's interior, which is usually one bed size smaller than the dog's "room" bed.
