Which breeds fit each size
Placing each breed by the top of its standard adult weight, as a bed should fit the larger dogs of the breed:
| Size | Breeds | Breeds whose top weight falls in the band |
|---|---|---|
| X-Small (up to 15 lb) | 19 | Chihuahua (6 lb), Poodle (Toy) (6.5 lb), Yorkshire Terrier (7 lb), Pomeranian (7 lb), Maltese (9 lb), Papillon (9 lb), Brussels Griffon (10 lb) and 12 more |
| Small (15–35 lb) | 32 | Poodle (Miniature) (15 lb), Tibetan Spaniel (15 lb), Lhasa Apso (15 lb), Border Terrier (15.5 lb), Shih Tzu (16 lb), Parson Russell Terrier (17 lb), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (18 lb) and 25 more |
| Medium (35–50 lb) | 15 | Lagotto Romagnolo (35 lb), Miniature Bull Terrier (35 lb), Cardigan Welsh Corgi (38 lb), Staffordshire Bull Terrier (38 lb), Brittany (40 lb), Whippet (40 lb), Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier (40 lb) and 8 more |
| Large (50–80 lb) | 36 | Bulldog (50 lb), Airedale Terrier (50 lb), Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (51 lb), Finnish Lapphund (53 lb), Border Collie (55 lb), Norwegian Elkhound (55 lb), Xoloitzcuintli (55 lb) and 29 more |
Above 80 lb the Wraparound chart stops: Spinone Italiano (71–82 lb), Boxer (50–85 lb), Rhodesian Ridgeback (about 85 lb), Alaskan Malamute (about 85 lb), Clumber Spaniel (70–85 lb), German Shepherd Dog (66–88 lb), Weimaraner (66–88 lb), Chow Chow (40–90 lb) and 22 more. For those dogs the Large at 42 × 33 in is the largest Wraparound bed charted, and the rectangle chart's open-ended X-Large (53 × 35 in) is the bigger option.
Wraparound against the rectangle bed
At the same dog weight, the Wraparound and the plain rectangle bed from the same fit guide are not the same footprint. For a dog just inside the top of each Wraparound band:
| Dog weight | Wraparound | Rectangle | Difference in floor area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 lb | X-Small, 20 × 19 in (380 sq in) | Small, 28 × 18 in (504 sq in) | -25% |
| 34 lb | Small, 28 × 21 in (588 sq in) | Small, 28 × 18 in (504 sq in) | +17% |
| 49 lb | Medium, 36 × 29 in (1044 sq in) | Medium, 36 × 24 in (864 sq in) | +21% |
| 79 lb | Large, 42 × 33 in (1386 sq in) | Large, 43 × 29 in (1247 sq in) | +11% |
In 3 of the 4 bands the Wraparound gives more floor than the rectangle bed for the same dog. Part of a shaped bed's footprint is taken by its raised edge, so the area a dog lies on is smaller than length times width; a dog that sleeps stretched out needs its nose-to-tail length plus a few inches of flat surface, measured as for a crate.
Worked examples
- Chihuahua, standard adult weight 3–6 lb: the X-Small Wraparound (20 × 19 in), against the Small rectangle bed.
- Spanish Water Dog, standard adult weight 40–49 lb: the Medium Wraparound (36 × 29 in), against the Medium rectangle bed.
- Spinone Italiano, standard adult weight 71–82 lb: heavier than the top Wraparound band; the largest is the Large (42 × 33 in), against the Large rectangle bed.
Puppies chew; a cheap bed in the adult size, or a folded blanket in the crate, gets most dogs through the chewing phase before the long-term bed goes down. All the bed charts are on the dog bed size page, next to the crate and feeding pages for each breed.
