Which breeds fit each size

Placing each breed by the top of its standard adult weight, as a bed should fit the larger dogs of the breed:

SizeBreedsBreeds whose top weight falls in the band
Small (up to 40 lb)55Chihuahua (6 lb), Poodle (Toy) (6.5 lb), Yorkshire Terrier (7 lb), Pomeranian (7 lb), Maltese (9 lb), Papillon (9 lb), Brussels Griffon (10 lb) and 48 more
Medium (40–60 lb)18Brittany (40 lb), Whippet (40 lb), Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier (40 lb), Kerry Blue Terrier (40 lb), Boykin Spaniel (40 lb), American Eskimo Dog (40 lb), Keeshond (44 lb) and 11 more
Large (60–90 lb)36Siberian Husky (60 lb), English Springer Spaniel (60 lb), Portuguese Water Dog (60 lb), Chinese Shar-Pei (60 lb), Afghan Hound (60 lb), Dalmatian (60 lb), Bearded Collie (60 lb) and 29 more
X-Large (90–120 lb)9Chow Chow (90 lb), Beauceron (99 lb), Doberman Pinscher (100 lb), Old English Sheepdog (101 lb), Borzoi (105 lb), Giant Schnauzer (105 lb), Cane Corso (110 lb) and 2 more

Above 120 lb the Deep Dish chart stops: Akita (American) (100–130 lb), Bullmastiff (110–130 lb), Black Russian Terrier (110–130 lb), Rottweiler (110–132 lb), Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (90–140 lb), Anatolian Shepherd Dog (110–150 lb), Neapolitan Mastiff (about 150 lb), Tibetan Mastiff (90–150 lb) and 6 more. For those dogs the X-Large at 50 × 37 in is the largest Deep Dish bed charted, and the rectangle chart's open-ended X-Large (53 × 35 in) is the bigger option.

Deep Dish against the rectangle bed

At the same dog weight, the Deep Dish and the plain rectangle bed from the same fit guide are not the same footprint. For a dog just inside the top of each Deep Dish band:

Dog weightDeep DishRectangleDifference in floor area

119 lbX-Large, 50 × 37 in (1850 sq in)X-Large, 53 × 35 in (1855 sq in)0%

In 3 of the 4 bands the Deep Dish gives more floor than the rectangle bed for the same dog. Part of a shaped bed's footprint is taken by its raised edge, so the area a dog lies on is smaller than length times width; a dog that sleeps stretched out needs its nose-to-tail length plus a few inches of flat surface, measured as for a crate.

Worked examples

Puppies chew; a cheap bed in the adult size, or a folded blanket in the crate, gets most dogs through the chewing phase before the long-term bed goes down. All the bed charts are on the dog bed size page, next to the crate and feeding pages for each breed.
