Dog size by weight chart
A 50 lb dog takes a 36 in crate on MidWest iCrate's chart, Kurgo Tru-Fit size Medium or Large, a Medium Orvis rectangle bed, and about 1164 kcal (3¼ cups) of food a day as a neutered adult. The table below gives the same answers from every published chart for each weight from 5 to 150 lb, with the breeds whose standard weight includes that figure. Weight bands are the makers' own; they disagree, and none replaces measuring the dog.
Every chart on one weight scale
Each row is one maker's chart; each block is a size and the dog weights the maker lists for it. Reading straight down from 30 lb, for example, gives MidWest iCrate 30 in, Petmate Sky Kennel 28 in or 32 in, Diggs Revol Small or Medium. Where a row has a gap, that maker lists no size for those weights; the table says so instead of guessing.

Where a weight sits on the boundary of two bands, both sizes are listed. Crates: MidWest Homes for Pets — iCrate product sizing (manufacturer) (checked 2026-10-20); Petmate — How to choose the right dog kennel size (Sky Kennel size table) (checked 2026-10-24); Diggs — Revol Dog Crate product page (checked 2026-10-24). Bed: Orvis — dog bed fit guide (Rectangle dog bed), checked 2026-10-20. Impact's collapsible crate publishes only minimum weights, so it is not used to pick a size here; it is on the crate size chart.
A weight band only tells you where to start. The crate's inside length has to be at least the dog's length from nose to base of tail plus a few inches, and its inside height at least the dog's standing head height plus a little; two dogs of the same weight can need different crates if one is long and low and the other tall and lean. The measuring guide and the sizer work from those measurements instead.
Harness size and food by dog weight
Harness weight bands: Kurgo — Tru-Fit Smart Dog Walking Harness size chart (manufacturer), checked 2026-10-21; PetSafe — Easy Walk Harness sizing chart (manufacturer, PetSafe UK product page), checked 2026-10-21. Calories: resting energy requirement 70 × kg0.75 times the Merck Veterinary Manual factor for a neutered adult; cups at Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice (adult dry)'s 369 kcal per cup (label), checked 2026-10-20. Breeds: those whose standard adult weight range includes the weight, the three most popular by AKC 2024 registrations shown first; each breed page names its standard.
Both harness makers size by measuring the dog: Kurgo Tru-Fit says "Measure chest and neck to determine harness size. The fit should be snug but not restrictive." and PetSafe Easy Walk says "Measuring your dog is the most accurate way to determine harness size. Weight ranges are only approximate. If your dog is between two sizes, choose a size up." Where a weight sits in two overlapping bands both sizes are listed; measure the dog as each maker describes and use the harness size chart to decide. Ruffwear publishes girth only, so it does not appear in this table. The food column is the neutered adult row only; puppies, intact dogs and dogs that gain weight easily need different amounts, which each weight's feeding page lists.
What "small", "medium" and "large" mean on each chart
Size names are the makers' own and they do not agree. On the charts below "Medium" starts at anywhere from 25 to 40 lb and ends at anywhere from 40 to 70 lb, so a dog that is "medium" for one product can be "large" for another.
| Chart | Small | Medium | Large |
|---|---|---|---|
| MidWest iCrate crate | 11–25 lb (24 in) | 26–40 lb (30 in) | 70–90 lb (42 in) |
| Diggs Revol crate | up to 30 lb | 30–50 lb | 70–90 lb |
| Kurgo Tru-Fit harness | 10–25 lb | 25–50 lb | 50–80 lb |
| PetSafe Easy Walk harness | 15–25 lb | 25–50 lb | 65–95 lb |
| Orvis rectangle bed | up to 40 lb | 40–70 lb | 70–100 lb |
| Orvis Deep Dish bed | up to 40 lb | 40–60 lb | 60–90 lb |
| Orvis Horseshoe bed | up to 40 lb | 40–60 lb | 60–120 lb |
| Orvis Wraparound bed | 15–35 lb | 35–50 lb | 50–80 lb |
Weight bands as each maker publishes them for the size of that name. Pup Sizer's breed pages also use their own grouping by the top of a breed's standard weight range (toy up to 12 lb, small to 25, medium to 60, large to 100, giant above); that grouping is ours, not an official class, and is not used to pick any product size.
Questions
What size crate for a 30, 40, 50 or 60 lb dog?
By each maker's published weight bands: 30 lb: MidWest iCrate 30 in, Petmate Sky Kennel 28 in or 32 in and Diggs Revol Small or Medium; 40 lb: MidWest iCrate 30 in, Petmate Sky Kennel 32 in and Diggs Revol Medium; 50 lb: MidWest iCrate 36 in, Petmate Sky Kennel 32 in or 36 in and Diggs Revol Medium or Intermediate; 60 lb: MidWest iCrate 36 in, Petmate Sky Kennel 36 in and Diggs Revol Intermediate. What size harness for a 30 lb dog?
Kurgo Tru-Fit lists Medium and PetSafe Easy Walk lists Small/Medium or Medium at 30 lb. Both makers size by measuring the dog: Kurgo Tru-Fit says "Measure chest and neck to determine harness size. If your dog is between two sizes, choose a size up."
How much should a 20 lb dog eat a day?
A neutered adult dog of 20 lb needs about 585 kcal a day (resting energy requirement 70 × kg^0.75, times the Merck factor of 1.6), which is 1½ cups of a 369 kcal per cup food. Intact, puppy and less active dogs need different amounts; the 20 lb feeding page gives every row.
What weight is a medium dog?
There is no single standard. On the charts quoted here, "Medium" starts anywhere from 25 lb to 40 lb and ends anywhere from 40 lb to 70 lb: MidWest iCrate crate 26–40 lb, Diggs Revol crate 30–50 lb, Kurgo Tru-Fit harness 25–50 lb, PetSafe Easy Walk harness 25–50 lb, Orvis rectangle bed 40–70 lb, Orvis Deep Dish bed 40–60 lb, Orvis Horseshoe bed 40–60 lb and Orvis Wraparound bed 35–50 lb.
